Laura Mayhan
Mechanical Engineering
Class of 2012
Laura works for Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as a Nuclear Shift Test Engineer for the Fast Attack Submarines. She has been working at Portsmouth for just over three years. Recently, she had the amazing opportunity of traveling to Hawaii for the summer for work. She will also spend several months in San Diego later this year.
Fun Facts:
In addition to being involved with SWE, Laura was captain of the Equestrian team as well as Vice President of Pi Tau Sigma, the Mechanical Engineering Honors Society, while studying at UML.
Laura says that Intro to Nuclear Engineering I and II were the hardest classes she has ever taken, but they were also her favorite. She loved what she was learning and they helped lead her down the path that is now her career. She also loved taking courses taught by Professors Avitable and Sherwood.
Favorite Place to be at UML: "I will always love everything about North Campus," says Laura.
Favorite Quote: "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life."
Her advice: Finding a job you love and are passionate about is the most important thing. You will spend a little more than 20% of your adult life at your job, don't pick a job you dread going to everyday. I got lucky and found my dream job right out of college, but if it takes you a few tries to find what you love to do that's okay. I absolutely love my job and I love going into work everyday. Don't settle for a mediocre job, or anything mediocre in life for that matter.
Fun Facts:
- She was in charge of starting up a reactor this year!
- She spent three months working at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.
- Out of over 70 employees, she is one of four qualified females to hold her current position at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. Her advice to women in engineering "which you've probably all figured out by now, is learn to play with the boys and don't be afraid to show them what you've got."
